R. B. Sreekumar
R.B. Sreekumar is a former Gujarat State Director-General of Police. He is mainly known for his allegations he made against the Government of Gujarat and its Chief Minister Narendra Modi, whom he claimed prevented the police from carrying out their duties during 2002 Gujarat violence.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Cop Nails Gujarat Lie )〕 Sreekumar was awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service in 1990 and a Medal for Distinguished Service in 1998 by the Government of India.
==Biography==
Sreekumar, a native of Ooruttambalam in Trivandrum District, Kerala, was born on 1947 February 12. He holds a post-graduate degree in history, Gandhian philosophy, law, and literature. A 1971 batch IPS officer, Sreekumar joined Gujarat police forces in 1972 and continued till his retirement in 2007 as additional director general of Police. He is the grandson of famous Indian revolutionary freedom fighter, nationalist, journalist and writer Balaramapuram G Raman Pillai who fought against the British for independence and started a newspaper called Navashakti. He was Additional DGP of Gujarat during Godra Incident and was Intelligence DGP during Gujarat communal violence 2002.
Sreekumar was denied promotion by Gujarat government to the rank of Director General of Police after he deposed against the government before the Nanavati-Shah Commission looking into the 2002 Godhra carnage and subsequent riots.〔 He took his case to the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) that gave its ruling in September 2006 in his favour. The state government then appealed to the vice-chairman of CAT, and subsequently to the Gujarat High Court, but Sreekumar came out victorious both times. Sreekumar had informed the Commission in detail how the police administration was made to compromise by the government during the riots.〔
Sreekumar has been accused of falsely implicating Nambi Narayanan, a scientist in Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in the espionage case. Sreekumar has filed〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Text of Sreekumar's defamation case )〕 defamation cases against Nambi Narayan, along with BJP leaders Rajnath Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, for trying to malign his name using false charges. Sreekumar further contended in that petition that he was Addnl Director of Intelligence when Nambi Narayan was arrested, and had no direct role in the criminal processes against him, which is supported by the CBI report of 2000 under Vajpayee government. And yet, Sreekumar contended, Narayan (in collusion with BJP) has been falsely bringing up allegations of torture etc. while letting off police officers who were actually named in the 2000 CBI report.
;Family
He was married to Rajalakshmi. Their only daughter Deepa is a law practitioner. He lives in Gandhinagar.
